Cinnamon is the most persistent of the natural blood sugar remedies. It appears in supplement aisles, diabetes blogs and morning coffee routines, and the research behind it is genuinely mixed — which is more interesting than either “it works” or “it’s nonsense”.
The proposed mechanism
Compounds in cinnamon, particularly cinnamaldehyde and certain polyphenols, appear in laboratory work to improve insulin receptor signalling, slow gastric emptying and inhibit enzymes that break down carbohydrate in the gut — a similar target to the drug acarbose.
The mechanism is plausible. Plausible mechanisms fail in humans all the time, so what matters is the trial data.
What the trials found
Individual trials point in different directions. Some found meaningful reductions in fasting glucose — occasionally on the order of 20–25 mg/dL — and modest A1C improvement. Others found nothing at all.
Meta-analyses reflect that split. Several report a statistically significant reduction in fasting glucose, but with high heterogeneity, meaning the studies disagree enough that pooling them is questionable. Effects on A1C — the measure that reflects three months of glucose control — are small and inconsistent, which is the more telling result.
Why the disagreement? Trials used different cinnamon species, different doses (from 1 to 6 g daily), different durations, and different populations. Many were small and short. A field this heterogeneous usually indicates a weak or conditional effect rather than a robust one.
Major diabetes organisations do not recommend cinnamon for glycemic control. That is a reasonable reading of this evidence.
The species distinction that matters for safety
This is the most practically important thing on this page, and it is about harm rather than benefit.
Cassia cinnamon — the cheap, common supermarket variety, from Cinnamomum cassia — contains coumarin, a compound that can cause liver damage at sufficient intake. European food safety authorities set a tolerable daily intake of 0.1 mg per kg of body weight, which for a 70 kg adult is around 7 mg of coumarin. Cassia can contain enough coumarin that a couple of teaspoons a day approaches or exceeds that.
Ceylon cinnamon — “true” cinnamon, Cinnamomum verum — contains only trace coumarin. It is lighter in colour, more brittle, and considerably more expensive.
Most cinnamon sold in the US as ground cinnamon is cassia and is not labelled as such. Anyone taking daily cinnamon supplements at gram doses should be using Ceylon, and should know why.
A reasonable position
Using cinnamon as a spice — in oatmeal, coffee, yogurt, cooking — is fine, pleasant, and may offer a small benefit. It also displaces sugar, which is a real if unglamorous advantage.
Taking cinnamon supplements as a glucose treatment is not supported well enough to justify it, and carries a coumarin risk if the species is wrong. If you want to try it, use Ceylon, keep to about 1–2 g daily, tell your doctor, and judge it by your own measurements over three months rather than by expectation.
What does have solid evidence, for comparison: a ten-minute walk after meals, eating vegetables and protein before starch, resistance training, and reducing refined carbohydrate (the full protocol). Cinnamon is a rounding error next to any of these.
When to see a doctor
Talk to a doctor before taking cinnamon supplements if you have liver disease, take medication metabolised by the liver, take anticoagulants, or take diabetes medication — if cinnamon does lower glucose, combining it with medication without adjustment risks hypoglycaemia. Never replace prescribed diabetes medication with a supplement.
The honest bottom line
The mechanism is real in the laboratory; the human evidence is inconsistent, and the effect on A1C — the measure that counts — is small and unreliable. Cinnamon as a spice is harmless and mildly useful. Cinnamon as a supplement is weakly supported and carries a genuine coumarin risk if it is cassia rather than Ceylon.

Does cinnamon lower blood sugar?
Modestly, for some people. A controlled trial using continuous glucose monitoring in adults with prediabetes found cinnamon improved glucose responses, but the effect is small and not a substitute for diet or medication.
How much cinnamon is safe?
Culinary amounts (up to about a teaspoon a day) are generally fine. Be cautious with high-dose supplements of cassia cinnamon, which contains coumarin that can harm the liver in large amounts.
Is Ceylon cinnamon better than cassia?
