Blood Sugar 101: An Evidence-Based Guide to Steady Glucose

Blood sugar — the glucose circulating in your bloodstream — is one of the most important and most misunderstood numbers in your health. When it swings too high too often, it quietly raises your risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and nerve and kidney damage. The good news is that few areas of health respond so quickly to simple, free changes in what and how you eat and move.

This is the part most people underestimate. Does meal timing matter?

Timing gets a lot of attention, and it does something — just less than the internet suggests. Eating most of your calories earlier tends to produce better glucose responses than eating them late, and skipping breakfast is not automatically harmful, though it changes how your body handles the next meal. When to talk to a doctor

Get your fasting glucose and A1C checked if you have never had them done, if you are over 45, or if you carry extra weight around the middle, have a family history of type 2 diabetes, had gestational diabetes, or have high blood pressure. Go sooner if you have persistent thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, blurred vision, or wounds that heal slowly. Blood sugar is easy to test and much easier to fix early than late.

The honest bottom line

Blood sugar responds to ordinary things, done consistently: fiber and protein at meals, better carbs rather than none, a walk after eating, muscle you actually use, and enough sleep.
