Of all the sleep advice available, bedroom temperature is the one with the clearest physiology and the least attention. Sleep does not merely happen at a particular temperature — a drop in body temperature is part of what starts it.

The mechanism

Core body temperature follows a daily rhythm, peaking in the early evening and falling to its lowest point in the early hours of the morning. That fall is a sleep signal, not a consequence of sleeping.

The body achieves it by dilating blood vessels in the hands and feet, dumping heat from the extremities into the surrounding air. This is why warm hands and feet at bedtime predict falling asleep faster, and why a cool room helps — it gives the heat somewhere to go.

If the room is too warm, that heat loss is impeded, the core temperature drop is blunted, and sleep onset is delayed. Sleep studies in warm conditions show more wakefulness, less slow-wave sleep and reduced REM.

The number

The commonly recommended range is roughly 60–67°F (about 15.6–19.4°C), with around 65°F often cited as a midpoint.

This is a reasonable general recommendation rather than a precise finding. Individual optimum varies with bedding, sleepwear, humidity, age and whether you share the bed. What is much better established is the direction: cooler than typical daytime comfort, and warm rooms clearly impair sleep. Treat the range as a starting point to adjust from, not a target to chase.

The warm bath paradox

A warm bath or shower before bed improves sleep — which sounds like it should do the opposite.

The explanation is that warming the skin drives blood to the surface, and when you get out, that dilated peripheral circulation dumps heat rapidly. Core temperature ends up falling faster than it otherwise would.

A meta-analysis found warm bathing of about 10 minutes, roughly 1 to 2 hours before bed, improved sleep onset latency. Timing matters — immediately before bed, you are still warm.

Practical adjustments

Set the thermostat lower at night, or use a programmable schedule to drop it around bedtime.

Manage humidity. High humidity blocks evaporative cooling, and a humid 68°F feels worse than a dry 70°F.

Uncover your feet. A remarkably effective and free intervention, given that the feet are a primary heat-dumping site.

Use breathable bedding — cotton or linen over synthetics — and consider separate blankets if you share a bed with someone whose thermal preferences differ.

Moving air helps even without lowering temperature, by improving evaporative cooling.

Alcohol raises skin temperature and disrupts thermoregulation, on top of its well-documented fragmentation of second-half-of-night sleep.

People in menopause. Hot flashes and night sweats are a leading cause of sleep disruption in midlife, and temperature management is a genuine part of the response.

Older adults, whose thermoregulation is less efficient.

Anyone in a hot climate without cooling, where this stops being a lifestyle tip — heat waves measurably reduce sleep duration across populations.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor for drenching night sweats that soak bedclothes, particularly with fever, unexplained weight loss or swollen lymph nodes — that combination needs investigation and is not a thermostat problem. Also seek assessment for loud snoring, gasping or witnessed pauses in breathing (the warning signs), and for insomnia persisting beyond three months, where cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia is the first-line treatment.

The honest bottom line

Falling core temperature is part of how sleep begins, and a warm room blocks it. Around 60–67°F is a sensible starting range rather than a proven optimum. A warm bath 1–2 hours before bed works by accelerating the same heat loss, and uncovering your feet is the cheapest version of the whole idea.
